The theatre in Eastern State

Demolition (Hubert
Robert in New Haven), 60"x42", ©1993, Oil
Constructed to withstand internal explosions,
the Winchester factory was riddled with reinforcing bars and thus so
strong that, during WWII, tanks were repaired on its upper floors. After
finishing this painting I discovered a drawing by Hubert Robert
(1733-1808) of classical ruins that was eerily similar to my image.

Factory I, 50"x32",

Many 19th century industrial buildings are
altered for other uses over time and their interiors become peculiarly
disorganized.

Eastern State Prison,
50"x38", ©1998, Oil
In my paintings based on views of Eastern
State Penitentiary, I have removed all specific evidence relating to the
nature of the site so that they carry a larger message about
melancholy and the passage of time.
